Les fouilles ont mis au jour une ville figée au moment exact de l’éruption, il y a plus de 1 900 ans. L’état de conservation du site provient de la couche de matériaux éruptifs — jusqu’à sept mètres — qui a recouvert le site et l’a protégé des pillages et des intempéries. Les cendres ont également brûlé tous les tissus vivants, puis se sont déposées, créant à la fois une gaine protectrice et une image en creux de l’objet détruit.
